Rustling in the Reeds

If you look and listen carefully as you travel or walk along the canal today you may be lucky enough to spot our first Coot chicks of the season. There are a number of nests in the reeds on the far bank opposite the woodland all the way up to Donisthorpe winding point. This particular brood are close by the bore hole inlet just past the wooden footbridge as you walk away from the Furnace. There will be a lot more hatching activity in the coming weeks, including the Mallards. Let us know how many you count.

There should be 2 chicks in this photo but one seems to have ducked out of shot - excuse the pun!
